METHOD
- In a wide bowl, beat the egg with the milk. Add the sugar and vanilla; soak the slices of bread in this mixture for 1 minute; turn so that the bread soaks up the mixture well.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet; add the bread and brown on one side for a few minutes; turn and brown the other side.
- Transfer to a plate and keep warm in a low oven while you cook the other slices.
- Serve hot, on its own or with maple syrup.
CHEF'S NOTES
An ideal way to use slightly stale bread. It's best with thick slices of country-style bread.
